Just as many Napa Valley wineries bottle both their house wine and a special reserve line that gets a bit more attention, Muir Glen also harvests and cans a very limited run of Reserve tomatoes each year. Muir Glen started producing the annual Reserve Tomatoes in 2008 and are excited about this new tradition.

Earlier this summer, one of the Muir Glen long-time grower partners in Yolo County planted the seeds and nurtured the plants that would bear the limited-edition 2010 Reserve tomatoes.
The unique Meridian Ruby variety was chosen for its deep red color and delectable tomato flavor. Grown exclusively for Muir Glen under certified organic practices, the 2010 Reserve tomatoes were hand-harvested at the peak of ripeness to guarantee the exceptional quality and taste you’ve come to expect from Muir Glen.
Meridian Ruby is offered in two varieties, Meridian Ruby Diced Tomatoes and Meridian Ruby Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes. The fire roasted tomatoes were grilled and smoked over a proprietary blend of hardwoods to add the smoky depth you’ve come to expect from Muir Glen Fire Roasted tomatoes.
The 2010 Reserve Tomatoes…Hand-Harvested, Hand-Sorted
To ensure none of the fresh tomato taste is lost, the Muir Glen Reserve harvest is a delicate balance of speed and meticulous sorting. The entire plant is scooped up to harvest the tomatoes and the fruit is examined to remove any unripe, overripe, or other less-than-perfect specimens. The discards and the tomato vines are then returned to the soil they grew in so that they can act as compost for future tomato plants. That is the organic way.
At the cannery, all of the tomatoes are sorted by hand according to color, size and aesthetics. Muir Glen looks for an ideal tomato size, a tomato that’s not too big, not too small, and would make your lasagna look like it came out of a five-star kitchen.
